What’s a DOULA?

Why should I have one?

A doula is a companion who supports a birthing person during labor and birth.

Reduced Cesarean Births

Studies indicate that doula-supported births are associated with a 50% reduction in cesarean deliveries.

Shorter Labor Duration

The presence of a doula can shorten labor by approximately 25%, contributing to a more efficient birthing process.

American Pregnancy Association

Decreased Use of Pain Medication

Individuals with doula support are less likely to request epidurals or other pain-relief medications, promoting a more natural birthing experience.

American Pregnancy Association

Lower Rates of Medical Interventions

Doula involvement is linked to a 40% reduction in the use of oxytocin (Pitocin) and a decrease in the need for forceps or vacuum extraction during delivery.

Enhanced Maternal Satisfaction

Birth trauma, is real trauma. We work to actively avoid those positions at all costs. Continuous support from a doula contributes to higher satisfaction with the childbirth experience, fostering a sense of empowerment and positive emotional well-being.

What to Expect...

At Body Built For Birth, we work with every individual family with a unique style of care that works for YOU, but you can generally expect the following comprehensive support:

Prenatal Care:

  • In-home or Virtual Prenatal Visits: We’ll meet in your home or virtually to discuss your birth plan, labor comfort measures, and your vision for the birth. We’ll also take time to get to know each other so you feel comfortable and prepared. Whether in-person or virtual, I provide resource packets with handouts and guides for you to keep.

  • Personalized Discussions: We’ll cover previous pregnancies, how you envision your birth, pain relief options, and any fears or concerns. I’ll assist in creating a Birth Plan and Postpartum Support Plan.

  • Support Throughout Pregnancy: I’m available to answer questions, offer resources, and provide emotional support. Every Monday, I’ll check in with you via text to see how you’re doing.

  • Partner Support: If you’re worried about how your partner will handle labor, I’m here to balance their involvement. I’ll guide them in coping techniques, give them breaks as needed, and ensure they feel supported too. Whether they want to be hands-on or prefer a more passive role, I’ll be there to make sure you both feel confident.

Labor & Birth:

  • 24/7 On-Call Availability: From 38 weeks until delivery, I’m on call for you. When you go into labor, I’ll be ready to join you at home, a birthing center, or a hospital whenever you need me.

  • Continuous In-Person Support: I’ll stay with you throughout labor and birth, offering relaxation techniques, massage, breath work, and emotional support. If your birthing center or hospital only allows one birth partner, I can switch to virtual support, staying with you through phone and video calls.

  • Backup Doula Arrangement: When you hire me, I’ll secure a Backup Doula at no additional cost. They’ll be available in case of an emergency, ensuring you’re never without support. You’ll have the opportunity to meet them beforehand, and they are professionals I trust completely.

Postpartum Support:

  • Immediate Postpartum Care: After birth, I’ll stay with you for about an hour to support bonding and assist with infant feeding, whether at home or in the hospital.

  • Postpartum Visit: Within the first two weeks after birth, we’ll schedule an in-home visit to discuss your birth experience, provide lactation support, and review your postpartum plans. I’ll also offer additional resources and referrals as needed.

Special Considerations:

  • IVF/RIVF Emotional Support: The journey to parenthood through IVF or RIVF can bring unique emotional challenges. I’m here to provide understanding and tailored support throughout your pregnancy and birth.

  • Surrogate Support: If you’re working with a surrogate, or are birthing a child as a surrogate, I offer specialized guidance to navigate this experience, for both sides of the experience, ensuring all parties feel supported and informed.

No matter your path, I’m committed to being there for you every step of the way, ensuring you feel empowered and cared for throughout this incredible journey.
